We have selected Shergarh in the tribal heartland of Madhya Pradesh as an outstanding example of one of India’s most beautiful Tiger Reserves. Set amongst almost a thousand kilometres of pristine wilderness, this family-run venture is home to over one hundred tigers, as well as hundreds of other species of birds and mammals. The combined passion and experience of its creators, a Parsi-British couple Jehan and Katie Bhujwala, has resulted in a Tiger Reserve firmly founded on the principles of ‘responsible tourism.’

Unlike many Indian wildlife parks, visitors are encouraged to minimise their impact on the natural environment by exploring the area on foot or by bike. Forest officials escort up to four guests on special walking safaris into the jungle, whilst mountain bikes are available for guests to take off freely and explore the local forest tracks. There are sunrise and sunset game drives with one of Shergarh’s in-camp naturalists, and you may even have the opportunity to enjoy ‘Sher Darshan’- watching tigers from elephant back. Outside the Reserve, you can take a stroll to the village or the weekly market , where the tribal people of Kanha will show you a way of life unchanged for centuries.

Shergarh has six spacious tents for its guests to stay in. Set amongst young woodland, and individually spaced to give total privacy, you can relax into your comfortable accommodation of mud-finished verandah, large bedroom and attached bathroom. Culinary experiences at the Reserve are based on traditional home-style recipes made from healthy, local produce, and dining is to be enjoyed either in the Main House, under the shade of a large mango tree or by the light of the moon.
